Our Story
Handcrafted Embroidered & Knit Products by Women in Rural Haiti
Maison d'Haiti ("House of Haiti) is the Haiti Projects' Artisanat Cooperative brand. Founded in 1994, we make heirloom quality, handcrafted embroidered and knit products.
Our founder, Sarah Hackett, was impressed with the embroidery skills of the local women in Fond des Blancs, Haiti, but found they lacked the simplest supplies to hone their craft. By providing the women needles and thread, Sarah realized she could provide not only the tools for embroidery but also the means to make a living in an area where employment is scarce.
As Fair Trade Federation members, Maison d’Haiti is committed to finding markets and customers for the handmade goods of our artisans. By increasing the demand for their goods, we can ensure stable, ongoing income for our artisans and their families.
Proceeds from the sale of these items go directly toward supporting the Haiti Projects artisans, providing them with life-changing income. Our artisans and staff report an average income increase of over 250% after working for Haiti Projects. Haiti Projects’ artisans earn, on average, 262% more than the Haitian national minimum wage.
