FAQs

How Often Will I Receive Letters?

Letters come once every month for 6 months.

How are letters selected?

Our team of curators searches historic archives worldwide for interesting letters that touch on relevant historic themes, or that are written by or to historic figures. Our team verifies the authenticity of the documents and then produces a replica of the original document to deliver to you.

What topics do the letters cover?

Our primary focus is on United States history, but we have included some documents from outside the US which are relevant to our themes. Themes (every 4 letters) delve deep into topics such as: Historic inventions, American Wars, and Foreign Diplomacy

Great for homeschooling

R.K. (Verified Buyer) 5/5

We homeschool our kids and got this as a conversation starter and extra history lesson once a month. The kids have enjoyed retelling the story to the grandparents! We can’t wait for the next one!

The hand-written documents are great

Dana (Verified Buyer) 4/5

Great, interesting product. They give you insight to historical events that you will never find in history books. Every issue also includes a copy of the hand-writtten supporting documents and a typewritten version. Great, great product! There Customer Service process is highly responsive. The only downside is that when I ordered a second 6 month subscription my first letter was a duplicate. I made one phone call and days later the problem was resolved and I had a replacement.

Our Story

I love history!

I grew up hearing war stories from both of my grandfathers who were in the U.S. Military in WWII, I spent time working on Capitol Hill, and even gave tours of the U.S. Capitol building. When I studied history in public school and at University, however, I often found the reading dry and boring. I founded History By Mail to provide others with the opportunity to learn directly from history by holding a piece of history (replicas of actual documents), rather than learning about history from textbooks. History comes alive when you hold a replica of a letter in Abraham Lincoln's handwriting or a handwritten speech by George Washington. Thank you for your interest in history and happy learning!
