FAQs

Where should I put my gauge?

For best results, place your rain gauge at least 15' from buildings, trees or other obstructions. Try to keep it as straight as possible and protected from strong prevailing winds.

Why is there foam in the tube? Should I remove it?

Please do NOT remove the foam from the blue measurement tube. It's what makes the Original Floating Rain Gauge float!

How do I empty the gauge?

Remove the collection cylinder from its stand and pour the water out. No need to remove the blue tube, water will flow around it.

Are these winter safe?

Our copper rain gauges are 100% winter safe, including the blue measurement tube. Our resin gauges should come inside if you live in an area where it's often below freezing for more than 24—48 hours at a time.

How do I clean the gauge?

Occasionally rinse out the measurement tube and copper or resin flute. You can clean the blue tube and the inside of the flute with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly before putting it back outside. Copper parts are untreated and will patina. To maintain a bright finish, you will need to polish it occasionally. Fun tip: ketchup works great!

How do I test for accuracy?

Bring your gauge inside. Remove the blue tube and set it aside. Pour 1 fluid ounce (a bit less than 2 tablespoons) into the collection container. Gently drop the blue tube back in. The gauge should measure 1".

We've Been Making Rain Fun Since 1999

Rain gauges help gardeners know when to water and let weather buffs keep track of rainfall. The World's Coolest Rain Gauge is an artistic twist on this classic device. Based on the Archimedean Principle of water displacement, our copper rain gauges are easy to read, fun to use and built to last in our Hudson Valley NY shop.

When we developed these gauges, we came up with a meaningless and slightly pretentious name: The Watermark. We’d take them to craft shows and demonstrate their function by pouring water into the collection container so the measurement tube would float up. Customers would watch and as they began to understand what was happening, they'd quietly say "Wow...that's so cool." So we decided to call it what it really was — The World's Coolest Rain Gauge.
