FAQs
How long does it take to get your first harvest?
About a week to 10 days.
How do you harvest the microgreens?
Just snip them off with scissors.
Do the microgreens regrow after harvest?
No. After you harvest the whole crop, pull out the used potting mix and compost it (or put it directly out into your garden soil - it's just dirt with roots in it). Then start another batch!
Do I have to order proprietary refills from you?
Nope! We hate those "loss leader" traps. You can use any seeds and seed starting / potting mix you like. We do offer refills for convenience if you like.
Are there heavy metals in your pottery?
We use lead-free glazes and pigments without heavy metals. And our clay has been specially formulated to remove the barium that is common in lots of terracotta recipes. However, as clay is a natural material from the earth, there are trace amounts of all elements present. The only heavy metals you will find are trace amounts naturally present in the clay. We mix all our clay and glaze in-house to make sure that it adheres to our strict standards.
Do I need grow lights or a heat mat?
Nope. The ambient light on a kitchen counter is plenty, and room temp is just right.
My pot arrived damaged. What do I do?
Oh no! Pottery is fragile, and as carefully as we pack them, sometimes packages get mishandled en route to you. Please take a picture of the damage and send it to us. We'll file a claim on your behalf with the shipper and replace the damaged item right away, for free.
How does the self-watering function work?
Terracotta is porous and gently wicks water from the reservoir into the tray where the seeds and soil are. The reservoir is big enough to hold about a week's worth of water.
How are the pots made?
We make them with a process called slip casting, where we pour liquid clay into a plaster mold and then pour it back out again, creating a hollow form. We dip glaze the raw (unfired) pots and fire them once at low-fire temperatures. We dip glaze instead of spraying to keep particulates out of the air, and we glaze the pots raw to save the extra energy involved in a pre-glaze bisque fire.

Our Story
Serial Plant Neglecter Invents Self-Watering Pots. Garden Thrives Now!
In my past life as a design consultant, I traveled a lot and killed all my seedlings. And TBH, even when I was home, I often forgot about them *just* long enough to kill them.
I really really wanted those plants though!
Being a designer and engineer, I figured I was more likely to invent something to water the plants for me that I was to remember to water every day. Many prototypes later, Orta terracotta self-watering pots were born.
Today we make our pots responsibly in our California studio, and ship all over the world in plastic-free packaging.
As for me? Still as forgetful as ever, but thanks to self-watering pots, my seedlings and microgreens stay alive!
