FAQs

How do I cast the Chill-N-Reel?

This video has a demo: https://youtu.be/U1KrjGibZVo. Simply point the spool in the direction you’d like to cast. Whichever direction the logo is facing is where the line will go. Make sure that you are holding the spool facing out, and with the other hand throw the bait and sinker. Depending on the amount of weight you have on the line, you can typically throw it up to 50-60 feet.

Will I spill my drink when the fish takes the bait?

To prevent a fish from getting away with your drink, just make sure you are holding the line correctly. Once you’ve casted out, hold the line in the opposite hand from your drink, with about a foot or two of slack between the Chill-N-Reel and your hand. Once the fish takes the bait, this will cause them to take off with the line in your hand and not spill your drink. In addition, this Grommet deal includes a Spill Guard to limit spilling even further!

How do I reel it? Will it spill my drink?

Hand-line reels have been around practically since the dawn of time, and it is very simple to wind the fishing line around the spool on your Chill-N-Reel. Prevent spilling by keeping your wrist firm on the hand holding your drink. Also, your Spill Guard (included in this Grommet deal) will limit spilling while you reel!

Won't the line hurt my fingers?

The Chill-N-Reel comes with just 8 lb test line, so any fish big enough to cut your skin would usually break the line off first. If your skin is particularly sensitive, though, you could wear a glove (but most people don’t need to). And if you want to try to catch bigger fish, the line is easily interchangeable so you can use a heavier weight (in that case, we do recommend a glove).

Do I need a fishing license to use the Chill-N-Reel?

In most areas, yes, you would need a fishing license to use a hand-line reel like the Chill-N-Reel. Hand-line fishing has been around for a very long time and is legal most everywhere. We recommend that you check with your local and state fishing guidelines to ensure that handline fishing is legal in your area, and whether a fishing license is required.

Jake Rutledge

Our Story

How Did a Redneck Firefighter Like Me Come Up With a Fishing Invention & Make It Onto Shark Tank?

A few years ago, firefighter Jake Rutledge was vacationing on the Gulf Coast of Florida with his family. They were all playing or sunbathing on the beach while he stood in waist-high water with his beer, watching the fish swim around him.

A life-long fisherman, Jake just had to figure out a way to catch fish without bringing a rod out (and while holding his drink). So, he tied some line to the bottom of his koozie and started catching fish, but his drink kept spilling and there just wasn't a great way to cast and reel. So he went back home and made a prototype to take back the following year.

After a ton of people wanted to buy it from him on the spot, he decided it was time to productize the "Chill-N-Reel" -- and his future Shark Tank business was born!
